We had a fantastic online The Leadership Academy Breakfast Club event this month. We really appreciate all those who came along to hear from others and to swap stories and experiences of volunteering.
A particular note of thanks to our amazing speakers Fahmeda Naheed and Aidan Collins for sharing both their time and their valuable insight with us. It was a really wide-ranging conversation but some of the bits we loved included:
- The interplay between volunteering and developing Leadership Skills, that the nature of volunteering means we inadvertently learn how to be better leaders
- The best way to encourage people to get involved is to show them, when they see people involved in their community who look like them, or they see their colleagues volunteer, it is the best way to encourage others to get involved
- The role of privilege in volunteering, some people volunteer to ‘give back’ but even if we haven’t accessed services it is important to consider how we can contribute to our own communities when we are in positions of privilege and have the resources to do so. If we have availed of free education or those other societal privileges it is incumbent on us to pay it back.
You can watch the recording back in the video below and feel free to share as widely as possible. This is a super valuable conversation.
