This article is entitled Crucibles of Leadership. It explores the mental qualities needed to becoming an inspiring leader. It asks the question – why is it that certain people seem to naturally inspire confidence, loyalty, and hard work, while others (who may have just as much vision and smarts) stumble, again and again?
The authors explain that a crucible is, by definition, a transformative experience through which an individual comes to a new or an altered sense of identity. These adverse experiences, they argue, can lead people to develop the kind of mental toughness that makes them a great leader.
